Dutch painter Piet Mondrian (–) was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. This landmark exhibition is the first of the artist’s work to be held in Ireland. It features art from all periods of his Exhibition of manuscripts at the National Gallery of Ireland book career: from early landscapes to his distinctive abstract paintings using geometric shapes.

These collections relate to Jack B. Yeats and members of his extended family and include highlights such as the artist's sketchbooks which cover over fifty years of his career, books from Yeats’s own library, a collection of journals, theatre programmes, original manuscripts, photographs, postcards and letters, as well as general memorabilia.

College’s library is loaning 11 prints from its manuscript collection to the National Gallery of Ireland for an exhibition about Irish paint etchers in the 19th century.

Dec 2, The National Gallery of Ireland has reopened after the lockdown with a landmark exhibition of work by Dutch painter Piet Mondrian (–) the first of the artist’s work to be held. Old Ireland in Colour celebrates the rich history of Ireland and the Irish through the colour restoration of stunning images of all walks of Irish life, and the Irish abroad, throughout the nineteenth and twentieth the chaos of the Civil War to the simple beauty of the islands, each image has been exquisitely transformed and every page is bursting with life.

Drawing on over books that Yeats’s family donated to the Library, the exhibition includes manuscript drafts of many of his most famous poems, other notebooks and writing samples – including the mediumistic automatic writing produced by his wife George – paintings such as a portrait of Yeats as a boy by his father, objets d’art like the original Chinese jade that inspired Yeats to write.

Accessing Manuscripts and Rare Books The Reading Room of the Department of Manuscripts is situated on the second floor of Kildare Street (see Opening Hours). Advanced ordering is in place for the Manuscripts Reading Room and material must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance.

The Book of Kells is an ancient, handwritten manuscript written in Latin of the Gospels from the Bible by monks around AD. It is on display within the Old Library at Trinity College. The Book of Kells is Ireland’s greatest treasure and the world’s most famous medieval manuscript.

It will showcase the manuscript’s history, making and symbolism in a new gallery. The redesign of the exhibition by world renowned Opera Amsterdam and Studio Louter will guide visitors on an immersive journey that places the manuscript in the context of Europe, Ireland, and Trinity College.
